Dawn Groskurth
When is an Early Years Educator also a trucker?

Answer: When she's an "On the Move" Program Coordinator like Dawn Groskurth at Today's Family

True, the truck Dawn drives isn't one of those "big rig" 18-wheelers — just your basic cube van. But it does have a big impact on the lives of children and caregivers served by this program.

The "On the Move" program brings free early learning services offered at Ontario Early Years Centres to people who otherwise wouldn't have easy access.

Dawn and other Today's Family Early Years Facilitators use the truck to set up Ontario Early Years Programs in rural school rooms, church gyms and other locations.

These “floating” programs offer many services:
Play area with toys
Informative parenting magazines and other “how to” resources for parents & caregivers
Creative art centre
Library area
Dramatic play area
Gross motor skills area (hopscotch, balls, etc)
Healthy snack area
Child-minding area for children while parents & caregivers are attending a workshop
Workshops for parents & caregivers

How popular is the "On the Move" program? Dawn remembers a wheelchair-bound four-year-old who broke his leg while tobogganing and ended up in a full-length body cast. "He'd been coming for over a year. He told his parents he didn't want to miss any of our visits and of course it was no problem. He just rolled right on in and had a great time per normal. We were delighted we could accommodate him."

We like to say our programs help children and parents "every step of the way." In this case, it was "even if you can't step." Thanks Dawn!
