With 50 new summer staff starting their first day of work last week, the first week of camp was exhilarating and nerve wracking all at the same time. There are new faces, new opportunities, and plenty of new kids eager to say ‘goodbye’ to school and ‘hello’ to summer!
With loads of prep through the month of June, our new staff have learned the games, practiced the activities, and are clear about our expectations. All the pieces are in place for a fun and engaging summer and after just four days, it’s already clear they’re putting their boundless energy and new-found skills into awesome action.
But where do the new staff come from, you may wonder?
Many of them – especially those in our camp programs – are part of the Canada Summer Jobs initiative. Canada Summer Jobs is a key component of the Youth Employment Strategy, which is the Government of Canada’s commitment to help young people gain the skills, work experience, and abilities they need to transition successfully into the labour market when the time comes.
Importantly for parents of campers who have cost as a concern, the program provides wage subsidies to employers from not-for-profit organizations like Today’s Family, as well as public-sector, and private sector organizations with 50 or fewer full-time employees, in order to create high quality summer work experiences for young people aged 15 to 30 years.
These youth summer work experiences represent important stepping stones on the path of life-long learning and we couldn’t be happier to provide meaningful job opportunities to deserving and very dedicated youth.
Kicking off our latest season of summer camps, we were pleased to have a visit last week from Hon. Filomena Tassi, Minister of Seniors and MP for Hamilton West – Ancaster – Dundas. With a smile that was a mile wide, she did a meet ’n greet with a few of the summer students who are here thanks to the Canada Summer Jobs Program.
Thank you Minister Tassi for your support and here’s an enthusiastic welcome to our incredible summer camp staff whether they’re new or simply starting another incredible new season.
Stay tuned for more about the camp programs and our people who make them so great!
