Today’s Family continues to support our families. Home Activities is a new blog series where we share activities and games to keep bodies and brains active while we all practice safe Social Distancing. Just as we’re sharing these thoughts with you, please share these ideas with your family and friends through social media.
Today’s Home Activity: Wikipedia Hunt
Ages: 10 and up
This game is one for the older children and can definitely be a bit tricky, so you might need to help out at first. We usually don’t use a lot of technology in our centres, but extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures. Plus, you might learn a lot!
The goal of the Wikipedia Hunt is simple: try to navigate between two pages using only links on each article. We suggest picking these articles in advance, and to make them somewhat similar, like countries or animals. For example, we can try to go from “Turtle” to “Rabbit.” This one is a bit easy: find the “Pets” link on the Turtle article, and then find the “Rabbits” link on the Pets article! Two steps! Wow!
We suggest working with your child as they do this activity, helping them if they get stuck or asking them to explain their thought process. Once they find a path from one page to another, you can either find two new articles or you can try to find a quicker path with fewer steps!
Why we love it: The internet can be an extremely useful tool for children to use to learn about the world, so learning how to use it in a fun and informative way is a good thing! Plus, you might stumble on a super-interesting page and learn something new!
