Today’s Home Activity: Packaging Whiz
Ages: 5 and up
Children are bombarded by marketing and advertising every day. This is a good activity to help build some media literacy abilities, so they will be better able to deal with it later in life. All you need is packaging: boxes or cans with labels are great. If you live in a logo-less house, you can pull up a shopping website on your phone or computer in a pinch. Flyers are also great for this activity.
Present your child with a bunch of boxes or flyers. Ask your child to pick out the thing that they think is the coolest or best. Use these sorts of value words to keep the focus on the advertisement, not just the product itself. Then, ask why they chose that particular ad.
Explain what you look for when you’re doing your grocery shopping: do you find the box with the coolest picture, or are there other things you consider? One big thing you can explain, especially for food, is the “Part of a healthy breakfast” trick. Show how sugary cereals can trick you into thinking they are healthy by being put next to actual healthy things, like fruit or toast.
Finally, you can ask your child to help you make a shopping list, helping you choose between different options based on their newfound knowledge.
Why we love it: Not only is this helping children understand and think critically about advertisements, you are also spending more time with your child, which is never a bad thing!
