Today, our home activity is Rock’n Art! This is a great activity for younger children (and parents who fondly remember their pet rocks from their childhood).
What you will need:
- Paint Brushes (optional)
- Muffin Tray to hold the paint
- Permanent markers
- A Sense of Adventure
- Find the Rock
Get ready for an adventure! Find a natural setting outside and find a great rock to paint. Try to find one that is a little smooth so it is easier to paint.
- Wash the Rock
Make your rock nice and clean by washing it with soap and water! This will help your paint and markers stick better to the rock’s surface.
- Paint the Rock
Pour your paint into the spaces of the muffin tray to make an artist’s pallet, and then use the brushes (or your fingers!) to paint your rock. Draw silly faces, write words of encouragement, or your favourite joke on the rock.
- Return the Rock
After the rock fully dries, go back outside and put the rock back in nature. Hopefully someone else will find it someday and feel happy and excited!
What’s going on?
Rock’n Art integrates a lot of learning goals into an easy-to-do activity. Children and parents can work together to decorate their rocks, or to find them in the first place! Finding the rocks helps children learn how to investigate, while decorating the rocks helps stoke the flames of creativity and imagination.
