Home Activities: The Patchwork Game

Today’s Family continues to support our families. Home Activities is a new blog series where we share activities and games to keep bodies and brains active while we all practice safe Social Distancing. Just as we’re sharing these thoughts with you, please share these ideas with your family and friends through social media.

Today’s Home Activity: Patchwork Game

Ages: All Ages

This is a great activity for stimulating critical thinking skills in children – no matter how old they are! Start with 16 pieces of paper, which you could have prepared already or will prepare together now. Some of the pieces could have pictures on them, and others can have words, or they can be all pictures or all words! Choose whatever setup is best for your child.

The goal is to sort the papers into a 4 x 4 grid, and for each paper to have some sort of connection to the papers next to it. For example, a picture of a parrot could go next to a picture of a boat, because they are both related to pirates. Have your child place the papers in order, and then ask them to explain some of their reasonings after they are done.

For younger children, the links should be easier to find. This even works well with toddlers or babies: you could ask them to sort them based on colours or shapes. For older children, you can have more words than pictures. For super-hard mode, ask your child for random words, Mad-Libs style, before they know what you are doing, and use those for the words on the papers.

Why we love it: This activity adds a tactile level to the thinking process, using physical relationships (papers being next to each other) to represent actual relationships. This kind of activity really helps in problem solving and noticing patterns.
