How Your Toddler Shows They Care About You

For toddlers, verbal communication is constantly developing. Every day, they’re learning more and more about how to effectively communicate with their caregivers, peers and, most importantly, you. Because toddlers don’t quite have a handle on exactly how to tell you how they’re feeling, they come up with all sorts of ways to show you that they care about you. Some of them are ways that you wouldn’t expect!

They’ll Run Away From You (And Know That You’ll Chase Them)

This one seems totally backwards, but it’s true! Your child wants to be near to you as much as possible – but they are also thinking, “Woah! I can run!” So, they’ll express their excitement about their new-found independence and their affection for you at the same time. When they run away from you, they are trusting that you’ll be right behind them every step of the way. Every time they look back at you with a cheeky grin, they’re reminding you how much they love you.

They’ll Want To Show You Everything

This is a point you’re likely familiar with. When a toddler cares about you, they’ll want to show you lots of wonderful things! “Look, a bug!” “Look, a truck!” This is a toddler’s way of trying to make you happy. They know what makes them happy, so it’s logical to think that these things will make you happy to.

They’ll Share With You

Whether it’s their snack, their favourite toy, or their boogers; when a toddler is fond of you, they’ll want to share with you. This is a big deal for a toddler! Sharing is a sacrifice; the toddler is opting out of the last bite of their cookie, just so you can have some. This is one of the ultimate ways that toddlers show they care.

They’ll Save Their Worst Behaviour…just for you!

This is another backwards one, but it makes sense when you think about it. When toddlers throw temper tantrums of any kind, they’re expressing discomfort or displeasure. If you find that a toddler is only expressing these feelings to you, it’s because they love and trust you. Think about it – you share your disappointments, sorrows and stresses with your closest friends and family because, at the end of the day, you know that they’ll make you feel better. That’s why it may seem like sometimes your toddler saves their worst behaviour just for you.

They’ll Always Welcome You Home

When you walk in the door, your toddler may run to you with open arms and shower you with affection. This is probably the biggest indicator of how much a toddler cares for you. Of course, they’re sad when you leave, but they trust you when you say that you love them and that you’ll be back soon.

How does your toddler show they care for you, a friend or a family member? Is it in ways that we haven’t mentioned? We’d love to hear all about it on our Facebook or Twitter.

We’ll see you next time!
